5 Abstract Sculptors for Large-Scale Commissions and Estate Collections

Looking for a Large-Scale Sculpture? Start with the Artist.

One of the questions I get asked most often is where to find exceptional large-scale sculpture. Whether it's for a private residence, hospitality project, corporate campus, or new development, the challenge isn't simply finding work that's big enough—it's finding sculpture with presence, craftsmanship, and the technical expertise to perform outdoors for decades.

While there are many talented sculptors working today, these are five artists I recommend often. I've worked with each of them personally, whether through commissions, exhibitions, or artist representation, and I'd feel confident placing their work in virtually any significant project. Beyond creating beautiful work, each has demonstrated the professionalism, fabrication expertise, and experience required for complex commissions.

What Makes a Great Large-Scale Sculpture?

Selecting sculpture for a major project involves far more than aesthetics. Material choice, engineering, fabrication, finish durability, transportation, installation, and long-term maintenance all play a role in determining whether a piece will succeed in its environment.

The artists below work primarily in steel and aluminum, creating sculpture designed to withstand outdoor conditions while maintaining its visual impact for years to come. Their work has been commissioned for private estates, residential developments, hospitality projects, corporate collections, museums, and public spaces.

John Clement creates monumental abstract sculptures from steel tubing that somehow manage to feel remarkably light. His sweeping arcs, spirals, and flowing forms seem almost effortless against the sky, despite the immense engineering required to produce them.

What I appreciate most is John's deep involvement in every stage of fabrication. His understanding of steel is evident in work that feels fluid and graceful while remaining structurally sophisticated. His sculptures are equally successful in expansive landscapes, sculpture gardens, and contemporary architectural settings. He is currently completing one of his largest works to date — a sixteen-foot sculpture — and offers work in both powder-coated color and natural steel finishes. He has the energy of someone who has spent a lifetime solving problems in metal, and that shows in every piece.

Matt Devine

Matt Devine is one of the West Coast’s most accomplished contemporary sculptors, creating abstract wall-mounted works, freestanding sculpture, and large-scale architectural installations.

Having worked alongside Matt on numerous commissions over the years, I can speak firsthand to what distinguishes his practice: exceptional fabrication quality, meticulous craftsmanship, and an unwavering level of professionalism. His welds are among the finest I've encountered — a detail that often goes unnoticed until clients compare work side by side. Matt regularly creates sculpture 10-12 feet in scale and is an outstanding choice for developers, hospitality groups, and private collectors seeking museum-quality work that is both technically rigorous and beautifully executed, at an approachable price point relative to his caliber.

Brad Howe

Reckon, Stainless steel, polyurethane, 127x 120x32 inches. City of Beverly Hills, CA.

Brad Howe's sculptures occupy a unique space between sculpture and architecture. Bold geometric forms, vivid color, and impeccable fabrication allow his work to anchor a landscape without overwhelming it.

Working primarily in stainless steel finished with high-performance architectural coatings, Howe has completed an impressive portfolio of commissions for municipalities, developers, museums, and corporate collections throughout the United States and internationally. His practice ranges from graphic linear compositions to stacked abstract forms and kinetic sculpture. I had the opportunity to work with Brad on a freestanding kinetic commission, and his understanding of both engineering and aesthetics is exceptional. His work represents a higher investment, but the quality and longevity more than justify it.

Ivan McLean

Ivan McLean's path to sculpture was anything but conventional. After serving in the Peace Corps and working on ranches, he learned to weld out of necessity — a background that continues to inform the honesty and physicality of his work today.

He is best known for his large-scale steel orbs and geometric forms that appear surprisingly light despite their substantial weight — they look as though they might roll away at any moment, which is part of their charm. His sculptures feel equally at home in contemporary landscapes, estate gardens, corporate campuses, and resort properties. Ivan approaches making with the curiosity and experimentation of an old-school mad scientist, and that spirit is evident throughout his work.

Pard Morrison

Pard Morrison creates vibrant geometric sculptures in aluminum finished with Fluoronar — an architectural-grade fluoropolymer coating prized for its exceptional color stability and long-term outdoor performance. For clients asking how a piece will hold up in sun, rain, and coastal conditions, Fluoronar is the right answer: it maintains vivid color for 25–30 years without fading, making Morrison's work an exceptionally practical choice for permanent installations.

His signature works are stacked totems and striped geometric forms in full-spectrum color palettes that feel joyful and energetic against natural backdrops — playful without being decorative, serious without being heavy. Morrison's work has been placed extensively in private collections, sculpture gardens, and public spaces internationally.

Commissioning Large Outdoor Sculpture

Every project is different, but most large-scale sculpture commissions involve site evaluation, budgeting, engineering, fabrication, transportation, installation, and coordination with architects, landscape designers, or contractors. Selecting the right artist is only one part of the process.

Because I work directly with artists and their studios, I help clients navigate each stage — from identifying the right artist for the project through pricing, timelines, fabrication, logistics, and installation. Whether you're commissioning a single sculpture for a private residence or curating artwork for a larger development, my goal is to make the process straightforward while ensuring the final work is the right fit for both the site and the client.

Interested in a Commission?

If you're considering a large-scale sculpture for a residential, commercial, hospitality, or public project, I'd be happy to discuss the possibilities. I maintain direct relationships with each of these artists and can facilitate introductions, commission conversations, and project management from concept through installation.
