An Artful Journey: From Concept to Installation of a Matt Devine Sculpture

Full Circle #2, 2023, aluminum with powder coat, 87 x 100 x 97 inches

INTRODUCTION:

Overseeing commissions is undeniably one of the most rewarding aspects of my job. Seeing a piece of art go from a mere concept to its final placement is a special creative process, and when that installation enhances the natural beauty of its surroundings, the experience becomes even more fulfilling. A recent collaboration with collectors in the Los Angeles area led to the commissioning of a stunning large-scale abstract sculpture by the exceptionally talented artist and dear friend, Matt Devine. The journey of placing their sculpture, now gracefully overlooking the Pacific Ocean, embodied a harmonious celebration of creativity, art, and nature.

SETTING THE VISION:

When the collectors expressed their interest in commissioning a work by Matt for their new coastal property, I was delighted to embark on this creative journey with them. We sought a sculpture that not only captivated the senses but also harmonized with the natural landscape of the property. Matt’s talent for evoking emotions and movement in his work made him the perfect artist to bring this vision to life.

NAVIGATING THE PROCESS

The journey from initial work interest to the final installation of the sculpture was an artful and well-orchestrated process, showcasing the seamless and professional approach of Matt’s studio. Together, the client was able to explore past work examples, visual Photoshop renderings and a photo of the maquette before approving the final design. The entire commission process spanned about nine weeks, resulting in a work crafted from aluminum, complemented by a UV-protected red powder coat – a mindful choice that considered its destined location.

DELIVERING PERFECTION:

Once we had final approval on the completed sculpture, I arranged delivery from Matt’s studio outside of Portland, OR to the collector’s property but with its massive size and weight, it was clear that regular crate/ship wouldn’t cut it. For projects such as this, I love using "hot-shot" trailers, which are dedicated flatbeds attached to a pickup truck. These trailers enable easy loading both at pick-up and at the delivery site, ensuring a smooth and efficient transportation process.

PRECISION PLACEMENT:

With the trusted team from Level One Art Installation by my side, the installation process continued smoothly. A well-orchestrated forklift maneuver expertly executed by the team ensured precise placement of the sculpture on the property.

As a note, I've had the privilege of working with Level One on projects like this for close to fifteen years, and I can confidently say that there is no better team to handle these types of installs. Their expertise and professionalism are unparalleled. I am a huge fan of Eric and his team, and I am more than happy to refer any business their way as they have a remarkable ability to make what could be stressful situations completely seamless and enjoyable.

Positioning the sculpture, weighing over 250 lbs, with absolute precision required the expert touch of both myself and the aforementioned skilled forklift maneuvers of Level One. Once the sculpture took its place, and its visual and physical presence could fully be appreciated, the collector's joy and satisfaction were palpable. It is in moments like this that make my job so rewarding. The collector's vision had come to life, and Matt’s beautiful sculpture now stood majestically, overlooking the vast expanse of the ocean.

A SEAMLESS COLLABORATION:

This was a special one and the installation was a resounding success, a testament to our collaboration and coordination from the initial concept to its final placement. The capacity to oversee a logistically complicated project and work closely with the client throughout the commissioning process ensured that their vision was brought to life flawlessly.

Throughout the journey, Matt Devine's studio demonstrated a level of professionalism that exceeded expectations. Their transparent and efficient communication fostered an environment of openness and collaboration, ensuring that every decision aligned with the collector's vision. From renderings to maquette approval and eventually to installation, the studio's seamless navigation of the logistics made the process smooth and enjoyable.

In the end, the collector not only acquired a gorgeous work of art but also experienced the combined efforts of Matt Devine's studio, Level One’s team, and my expertise came together to elevate the intoxicating joy experienced in this process. A perfect ending for an extraordinary opportunity.
